Essential Oils in the Ancient World, pt. I

Apr 13th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Essential oils are gaining worldwide recognition for their versatility, but their use is not necessarily new. The use of botanicals as healing agents is a long-standing practice throughout human history. In fact, essential oils and other botanicals have been used in wellness practices as early as 3500 B.C. That’s prehistoric!

This week on the blog, we’ll be exploring the use* of essential oils in ancient Egypt, their increased exposure, and how Young Living’s Seed to Seal® process is the evolutionary pinnacle of thousands of years of essential oil production and use. First up, let’s explore a culture where some of the first recorded uses of essential oil precursors began: Egypt.

Ancient Oils in Ancient Egypt

The fertile soil around the Nile River became a source of life throughout Africa. The kingdom of Egypt grew around the delta of the Nile, and its name became synonymous with power, wealth, and technological advancement.

The abundance of food in Egypt, owed to the richness of the land, allowed for the development of a rich culture, which included some of the earliest advances in writing, agriculture, urbanization, and central government. In addition, this progressive culture was the perfect stage for innovation in herbal medicine.

One of the first recognized compilations by ancient healers is called the Ebers Papyrus. Although it dates from approximately 1500 B.C., it is believed to have been copied from earlier texts. The scroll contains recipes, ceremonies, and other information that Egyptians deemed worthy of preservation.

But, of course, the most famous Egyptian use of aromatic botanicals is in mummification. In preparing the bodies of the deceased for burial, embalmers used various botanicals such as cinnamon, resins such as frankincense and myrrh, and an early form of cedar or juniper essential oil.

With such cutting-edge advances, Egypt’s international renown drew researchers from neighboring countries, leading to expanded use of botanicals in everyday life. Check out our next post, as we discuss how Egypt’s influence precipitated the spread of essential oil wisdom throughout the ancient world.

Keep Your Smile Its Brightest!

Apr 10th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

It can be easy to let good habits slip. A dinner with friends may run late, or you just might be too tired from a long day at work to do anything but jump into bed. Before long the good dental habits from childhood fade, and flossing is more the exception than the rule. If your routine has you expecting a lecture at your next dental appointment, we have five great tips to give both you and your dentist something to smile about!

Brush Properly

It’s all in the details. While it might be easy to remember tooth brushing morning and night, it’s as important to be thorough as it is to be consistent. Some things to try include:

  • Dividing your mouth into four equal sections and spending 30 seconds on each. Don’t forget to brush both the inner and outer surfaces of teeth.
  • Paying extra attention to the gumline, hard-to-reach back teeth, and areas around fillings, crowns, and other dental work.
  • Ensuring fresher breath by getting all areas of the mouth, including gums, insides of cheeks, and tongue.
  • Using a toothpaste with naturally derived ingredients that gently and effectively cleans teeth, such as our Thieves® AromaBright Toothpaste.

Be Gentle

Don’t confuse thorough brushing with aggressive brushing. You can get a sparkling smile while still being kind to your teeth and gums!

  • Brush with short, gentle, circular strokes. Brushing too aggressively can wear down tooth enamel and damage gums. The point is to remove plaque, which does not take much force. A bacterial film, plaque forms between teeth and along the gumline, eating away enamel, weakening the teeth, and leading to cavities.
  • The American Dental Association recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Bristles that are too stiff can hurt gums.

Caring for Your Brush

If your toothbrush is more than three to four months old, it’s not doing as much good as it could. Change your toothbrush regularly, and rinse and let it dry after every use to keep it clean and extend its life.

Protect Your Enamel

Enamel is the shield for your teeth, and it’s important to protect your protection. Once tooth enamel is eroded, it does not grow back. Keep your enamel safe by:

  • Avoiding acidic, sticky, and sugary foods.
  • Waiting 30 minutes after eating to brush your teeth. This allows your saliva time to dissolve leftover food particles. Saliva helps protect teeth.
  • Flossing once per day. While it’s good to remove food particles from between teeth, the real value of flossing is removing plaque. A great choice for daily flossing is Thieves Dental Floss. Thin, strong, and made with a fresh burst of Thieves and Peppermint essential oils, it resists fraying and breakage and easily glides between teeth for those hard-to-reach places.

Use Mouthwash

Even the most thorough brushing and flossing don’t get your mouth as clean as it can be. Twice daily, swish for 30–60 seconds with an alcohol-free mouthwash made with naturally derived ingredients, such as Thieves Fresh Essence Mouthwash, for fresh breath and clean teeth.

With help from these tips and other Thieves oral care products from our O.I.L.™ promotion, your dentist is sure to be impressed at your next visit! What do you do to keep your smile fresh? Let us know in the comments!

Promoting Sustainability by Reusing Tree By-Product

Apr 9th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

At Young Living we revere nature and recognize the importance of making every effort to reduce waste and create a more sustainable environment. We have found another way to do exactly that by reusing tree by-product from our Highland Flats farm!

Highland Flats Young Living FarmAt the Highland Flats farm in Idaho, we grow and distill balsam fir, ponderosa pine, and blue spruce to bring the highest quality products to our members. After the precious oil is distilled from the trees, the tree by-product is removed from the distiller and shipped to a local paper mill. The paper mill utilizes Young Living’s tree by-product in the production process of the tube for our newly designed essential oil roll-ons!

Next time you reach for your Stress Away, RutaVaLa™, or Tranquil roll-on, keep in mind Young Living’s commitment to protecting nature and promoting  the use of sustainable practices.

10,000 Steps: Walking the Path to Better Health

Mar 24th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

According to the American Heart Association (ADA), being physically active can play a major role in preventing heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 5 killers in the United States. So what’s an easy way for you to get up and improve your health? Give a few extra steps of walking each day a try!

Walking ShoesWhen it comes to walking as exercise, there has been a lot of buzz recently about one magic number: 10,000 steps. In an article on PubMed, a widely respected online database of medical journal articles, some experts have weighed in on why that number is so appealing.

“A value of 10,000 steps/day is gaining popularity with the media and in practice and can be traced to Japanese walking clubs…10,000 steps/day appears to be a reasonable estimate of daily activity for apparently healthy adults, and studies are emerging documenting the health benefits of attaining similar levels.”

Reaching 10,000 steps can be a great part of your weekly fitness goals. The ADA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend getting 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (e.g., brisk walking) every week. Setting a goal to walk 10,000 steps per day can be great motivation, not to mention can give you something easily measurable. So how do you get out of that office chair and reach the 10,000 steps per day goal? Here are some fun and simple ideas that you can easily add to your daily routine:

  • Get a pedometer and log your steps. Studies have shown that wearing a pedometer helped people walk 15 percent more each day.
  • During daylight hours, park at the end of the parking lot when shopping or running errands.
  • Take the stairs rather than elevators and escalators.
  • Bring comfortable shoes to work and go for a 15-minute walk during your lunch break.
  • Shoes and HeadphonesResearch local walking paths online.
  • Invite a friend to go on an early morning walk with you through your neighborhood or a local sports park.
  • Walk around the field or neighborhood during your child’s dance class, soccer practice, etc., instead of sitting and waiting.
  • Get the mail every day, and take a longer route to the mailbox.
  • Walk over to a coworker’s desk to talk to him or her in person instead of sending an email.
  • Early for an appointment? Walk around the block first instead of heading straight to the waiting room.
  • Set an alarm on your computer, phone, etc., to go off every hour to remind you to stand up and walk around for a few minutes.
  • Instead of reading a book on the couch, download it as an audiobook and listen while you go for a walk.

How do you work a few extra minutes of walking into your busy schedule? Share your tips with us in the comments!

Clean Safely with These Simple DIYs

Mar 20th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Young Living UniversityAre you ready to take your Young Living know-how to the next level? Welcome to YL University, your first stop for essential oil education!

Conveniently located in the Member Resources tab in your Virtual Office, YL University is a series of courses designed to help you understand the production of essential oils, develop product expertise, and build confidence as you improve your life and live your dreams.

Because the series will be broken up into classes, you will be able to learn at your own pace and brush up on individual topics as we add to the program. YL University will also be a great sharing tool, serving as an effective way to introduce prospective members to different aspects of Young Living.

The first installment in this series is now available, so visit Virtual Office today!

Many of our members have been concerned about our low supply of difficult-to-source essential oils. Some of our oils are available only on a seasonal basis, and other oils are so rare that I am grateful to have ever had exposure to them.

I am often asked why this is. Well, it’s pretty simple really: Young Living doesn’t accept anything but the best.

It has always been Young Living’s duty to give our members the purest, most effective essential oil products available anywhere. As I have seen firsthand at our Highland Flats and Northern Lights farms, dealing with nature as a business partner is not always easy. The weather can be too hot, too cold, too wet, or too dry. These whims of nature impact our oil production and your business, but we make it a point to never cut corners or sacrifice quality.

So how can we get the most out of these rare oils when they’re available? Here are a few of my favorite tips on how to make them last all year.

Cook!

Cooking really amplifies the aroma and intensity of essential oils. In other words, it doesn’t take a lot to really spice up your favorite dish! I love to add a drop of Basil to a vegan cauliflower alfredo sauce that I make, and I add a drop or two of Jade Lemon to my drinking water for a fresh taste. You can find all kinds of ways to use these special oils in your kitchen!

Body Scrub with Young Living Essential OilsCraft!

Creating your own home and personal care products is so much fun and makes for great gifts, while stretching the oils you choose. I love my homemade body scrub with Lavender and Frankincense and my body moisturizer with Lavender, Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood, and Geranium.

Diffuse!

Aria Diffuser with Essential Oils - Young LivingYoung Living offers an impressive assortment of diffusers and nebulizers. Diffusers are a worthwhile investment because they stretch your essential oil budget and disperse the essential oil throughout a much larger area than other methods. I have an AromaLux in my living room, a Bamboo Diffuser in my kitchen, a Home Diffuser in my guest room and bathroom, a Rainstone in my bedroom, a USB diffuser on the road, and an Aria in my office. I love them all!

These are just a few ideas I’ve had. Leave a comment and tell us how you make the most of your essential oils!

If you have any questions about why some essential oils are difficult to source, what makes an oil rare, and why some oils are not always available, check out this short, informative video.

—Lindsey Elmore, PharmD, BCPS, Young Living Director of Global Education and Health Sciences

Adults spend an average of 8–12 minutes showering every day. Think about that: that’s over an hour a week and 5 hours a month. Whether you like to wake up with a shower or wait until the evening to clean off the day’s grime, you might need to make a few changes to your routine.

Shower HeadWhen it comes to keeping clean, not just any old product will do, so make sure you’re packing the right products. Many commercial soaps and shampoos contain harsh surfactants like sulfates or concerning ingredients like parabens. Young Living’s personal care products not only avoid those ingredients, but they also give you the benefits of pure essential oils.

“Lather, Rinse, Repeat” Doesn’t Hold Water

We’ve all heard the old saying, but shampoo labels are merely telling us to wash our hair more than once. The phrase doesn’t necessarily mean you should “repeat” every day. In fact, unless your hair is oily, you probably only need to wash your hair 2–3 times per week. Gentler shampoos like Young Living’s Lavender Shampoo will get your hair clean without stripping away natural oils.

Don’t Overdo It with Conditioner

For most of us, natural oils keep the hair closest to our scalp sufficiently moisturized. Putting conditioner on your roots can over-moisturize, leaving your hair flat and undercutting your efforts at cultivating full-bodied hair volume. Instead, only apply conditioners like Young Living’s Lavender Conditioner from your hair’s mid-length through the ends. Leave in for 1–2 minutes to give the conditioner time to do its work, and voila! Balanced, more beautiful hair!

Toss Out Your Loofah

When it comes to exfoliating skin, loofahs are a favorite tool. However, since you keep your loofah in the shower, it never really dries out, making it prime real estate for a bacteria colony. Translation: every pass over your skin with the loofah leaves a trail of unwanted bacterial interlopers.

Instead, exfoliate with a homemade sugar scrub. In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup almond or coconut oil, 1 cup brown sugar, and 2 drops of your favorite essential oil, such as a combination of Cedarwood and Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood. For a gentle and effective facial exfoliator, try Satin Facial Scrub, Mint. It will leave your complexion feeling and looking fresh, invigorated, and clean.

Clean Your Face Last

The majority of us are most concerned with the appearance of our face, so it’s understandable that this is a top priority. However, ingredients in other shower products might run onto your face and leave a residue, meaning you could be clogging your pores instead of getting clean! When the time is right, our top-of-the-line facial wash, ART® Gentle Cleanser, uses a mild foaming action that leaves your face feeling clean, soft, and supple.

Lindsay Teague Moreno is a driven, no-nonsense leader. She rose through the Young Living ranks to Royal Crown Diamond in an amazing 15 months and hasn’t stopped reaching for higher goals. We were able to take a few minutes and sit down with Lindsay to get her take on success, business, and where she sees things headed in the future.

How did you get involved with Young Living?

I have three small kids, and we were getting ready to go on a trip in February of 2013. I saw a post on Facebook about using oils and had the insight that they might be great to take with us. I fell madly in love with Thieves®. At the time I actively tried not to pursue the business, but on March 25, 2013, it was made very clear to me that THIS was my path, and I began pursuing the business of Young Living. That is the day the Lemon Droppers were born!

How large is your organization?

Right now there are over 131,000 members in my downline, and close to a quarter of them are business members, including two Royal Crown Diamond, six Diamond, 31 Platinum, 85 Gold, 490 Silver, and 1,157 Executive members. In fewer than two years, those numbers astound me, and I can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store for us! We’re doing our best to accomplish the mission set before us: to get oils into every home.

What is your focus in 2015?

For my downline my focus is and always will be leadership replication. That’s never far from my thoughts as I make projections, plans, and brainstorm for the year. Outside of that I have set my intentions to reevaluate priorities now that my downline is physically more than I can handle on my own.

It’s also time to enjoy the fruits of my 100-hour workweeks. I want to get to a place where I have time to spend with my family, write, travel, and enjoy photography more. I’m also going to strive to simplify everything this year. I’m in the middle of creating a system for the Lemon Droppers that doesn’t hinge on my being available 24 hours a day—a replicable and systematic approach to the way the Lemon Droppers do business. I’m also going to be my most valiant self. My word for the year is, wait for it…valor. I fully intend to do the things that scare me in 2015. So far I’ve taken some big, scary steps toward my intentions, and I am feeling really positive about what’s to come.

What are your favorite products and why?

There are a few oils that I can’t allow myself to be without: Peppermint, Thieves, R.C., Exodus II, Valor®, and M-Grain. I would add that I absolutely love the KidScents® oils. I keep them in a drawer where my girls can grab their oils as they need them. They love the autonomy to do it on their own, and I love that I don’t have to get it for them!

Do you have any tried-and-true product usage tips?

Recently, my husband Michael and I have had a lot of great results using our oils sublingually. He’s completely obsessed with dropping a few drops of Peppermint under his tongue a few times a day after meals. Some aren’t the tastiest oils, I think we can all agree! Drop a couple of drops under your tongue and just let it soak in without talking or swishing it around. Before you know it, it’s totally dissolved, and you don’t have to fight the taste.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The people. I work with the most dedicated, hard-core, positive, no-excuses hustlers in the entire world. I am so blessed to call these people co-workers and friends. I have a group of leaders that love me, support me, and challenge me all at the same time. Everyone should be so lucky. It is my pleasure to be a servant leader to this group.

What’s your best business advice for aspiring Royal Crown Diamonds?

This is a job you can refuse to fail at, but it has to come from you, your heart, your why. My best advice is to create your life goals, scratch them out, dream bigger, and then hustle as hard as you have to in order to get there. Be willing to do anything asked of you to get there. I’m not talking about walking on others to lift yourself up. I’m talking about being willing to be the first one in and the last one to leave. That’s the hustle. It’s important to remember that helping others get what they want will, in turn, get you what you want. Be the leader who gives more in value than they take. That’s what people want to follow. Be willing to anticipate the needs of your team, and take it upon yourself to see that those needs are met. The day you stop complaining about what you don’t have and you stop expecting anyone else to do anything for you, is the day you see your first glimpse of success. I’ve been a Royal Crown Diamond for coming up on a year this summer, and there isn’t a job I won’t do. None of us, no matter what the rank, are better than we were our first day.

What are you most excited for in Young Living’s future?

I am so excited about Young Living’s future growth. There’s absolutely no stopping us! I am so pumped to see us streamline operations and absolutely crush the growth we’ve been seeing year over year. It’s a bright future at Young Living. As my man Zig Ziglar would say, “I’m so positive, I’d go after Moby Dick in a rowboat and take the tartar sauce with me!”

Young Living - Etched Water Bottles

Between a busy lifestyle and the quick availability of sweet and fizzy beverage options, getting enough water each day isn’t always easy; but it is important.

Experts in fields from beauty to medicine agree that hydration’s role in proper physical function cannot be overstated. According to the Mayo Clinic, your daily activities, such as breathing and sweating, deplete your hydration, making a fluid intake of 13 cups for men and 9 cups for women crucial—more if you are exercising or live in a hot climate.

Not in the habit of drinking enough? With a custom glass water bottle and your favorite sweet essential oils, you’ll love meeting your daily goal! Check out our fun, easy DIY instructions below for etching a personalized design on your water bottle. Almost all of the necessary supplies should be available at your local crafts store.

Young Living - Etched Water Bottle

James Lawrence - Young Living Brand AmbassadorNicknamed the Iron Cowboy for the cowboy hats his kids pick out for him each race, James’ accomplishments are impressive: world record holder for most half Ironman-distance races in one year with 22; world recorder holder for most Ironman-distance races in one year with 30; avid fundraiser and spokesperson for Quiet Way, a charitable foundation; Young Living brand ambassador; and loving husband and father of five.

But James is not stopping there. This summer the Iron Cowboy plans to saddle up for his latest seemingly impossible goal: 50 Ironman courses, in 50 states, in 50 days. What lifts him to such great heights? If you listen to James long enough, you’ll hear him use the word “conviction” a lot.

James Lawrence - Young Living Brand Ambassador

“I try to teach my kids that no goal is too big and that with enough conviction, even the impossible can become possible,” he says. “Somebody recently asked me if there is a plan B for 50-50-50. I was shocked! My mind just doesn’t work that way. The goal is 50-50-50. There is no plan B. You just have to have so much conviction that nothing will distract you from your goals. If your conviction is real, nothing can get in your way.”

James also knows that all the conviction in the world can’t help you if you don’t treat your body right, so he’s been using Young Living products since 1994. On a daily basis, James uses a variety of products such as NingXia Red®, Inner Defense, and Ortho Sport®. During long training sessions or races, James supplements his nutrition with products such as Balance Complete, Pure Protein Complete, NingXia Nitro, and Slique Bars.

“Young Living products are a permanent part of my training, competing, and my family life,” says James.

We wish James the best as he makes the impossible possible during his quest for 50-50-50 this summer! Check out his website, where you can follow him during his journey.

Young Living ART Skin Care SystemA few months ago I had the privilege of introducing the recently updated ART® Skin Care System at a member meeting in Texas. On my way through airport security, I forgot to remove my ART products from my carry-on luggage, so I was called over for an additional bag check. When the TSA agent opened the bag and saw the kit, she exclaimed, “Oh, that’s Young Living. I know that company!”

Thanks to our reputation for high-quality products and a diverse member community, people the world over are coming to recognize Young Living, but we are not a sudden trend. For 20 years we have been committed to offering our members the best products available, infused with the power of essential oils.

The same product that I had in my bag at the airport is a great example of our commitment: the ART Skin Care System. One of our most popular personal care items, the ART Skin Care System features naturally derived extracts that reveal true beauty, without resorting to synthetics. I love that this simple, three-step system can refresh the skin with ingredients such as:

Young Living - Seed to Seal

  • Seed to Seal-quality essential oils: We use authentic essential oils celebrated for their ability to nourish and beautify the skin.
  • Orchid flower extract: Often used in traditional beauty products, orchid extract is deeply hydrating.
  • Proprietary blend of botanical extracts: Preserves ART products naturally, preventing the growth of germs, fungus, and mold in the container.

Young Living ART Skin Care SystemPremium products like this show that Young Living’s commitment to quality isn’t a marketing gimmick. We have earned our reputation as the world leader in essential oils. My experience with the TSA agent in Texas isn’t the first time I’ve unexpectedly met someone who has heard of us, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Have you tried the updated ART skin care system? What are your Young Living travel beauty must-haves? Let us know in the comments!
