Essential Oil Storage: The Basics

Aug 2nd, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Young Living - Peppermint, Lavender, Lime Essential OilsWith access to hundreds of pure, authentic essential oils and blends through Young Living, you’re bound to keep your favorites on hand throughout your house, car, gym bag, and elsewhere. When you take your oils everywhere, though, protecting them may not be your first thought. But, thankfully, the rules for storing your favorite oils are simple! Here are a few easy-to-follow tips to ensure that your essential oils stay at their peak potency.

Don’t Bring the Heat!

Prolonged exposure to sunlight and extreme heat can change the chemical composition and evaporation rate—and, therefore, the efficacy—of even the purest essential oils. Avoid keeping your oils in the car, near windows, or next to any heat source for extended periods of time.

Of course, it’s never a bad idea to spice up your cooking with essential oils for a delicious, twist—just be sure to mix in the drops with your drink or meal instead of dropping them directly onto a hot saucepan or other heat source.

Amber Bottles - Young LivingBottling Your Own Blend?

If you make your own blends, we recommend following our practice of storing all oils in amber-glass bottles. Amber-colored bottles protect the oils from damaging ultraviolet light, while the glass is strong enough for certain oils and blends like citrus oils that may dissolve plastic.

Gear to Protect Your Oils

Forget your purse and Ziploc baggies—the best gear to protect and easily transport your essential oils are Young Living’s carrying and storage cases. They keep your bottles neatly organized and accessible while protecting them from impacts that could crack or shatter the glass.

For those on the go, our compact 10-Oil Case is a convenient choice that comes in blue, fuchsia, or green. If you want a little more space, check out our 16-bottle Essential Oil Carrying Case or the 30-Oil Case. And for those times when you need your entire collection, try the Aroma Kit Soft Case, which holds up to 130 5-ml bottles of your favorite essential oils and blends.

What’s your favorite storage solution for your essential oils? Let us know in the comments!

Sit-Down, Sweat-Free Aroma Yoga®

Jul 28th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

From stimulating and invigorating the body and mind to staying relaxed during chaotic times, yoga is a go-to for meditation and fitness. With this Aroma Yoga chair sequence, you can clear your mind, fine-tune your focus, and get energy flowing anytime of the day.

Start by choosing your favorite essential oil whose aroma will set the mood for your practice. For a calming aromatic influence, try the Young Living blends Stress Away, Grounding, or Peace Calming II. Sweet, woody singles such as Cedarwood or Idaho Balsam Fir are also great choices. If you need an uplifting aroma, try using blends such as Clarity or Transformation.

Aroma Yoga Chair Sequence

Benefits: Calming and centering. Brings you into present time.

Note: During any of the following exercises, freely reapply the essential oil into your palms.

  1. Place a few essential oil drops into your left palm, rub your palms together gently three times, and bring your cupped palms close to your nose. Inhale deeply for three counts, pausing at the top of your inhalation. Imagine essential oil molecules entering your brain, the center of your head, and your lungs.
  2. Focus on your breathing. Exhale for three counts and bring your palms down to your lap.
  3. Repeat this process for a few moments, and then set a specific intention. For example, “I take this time to listen to my body’s needs.” You can even ask yourself, “What is my highest choice to experience in the next five minutes?”

Benefits: May help encourage mental relaxation. Ideal for practicing while seated in front of a computer.

  1. Sitting at the front edge of the chair, place your feet on the floor at hip width. Make sure your ankles are aligned directly beneath your knees and your toes are pointing straight ahead.
  2. Elongate your spine by pressing down through your feet while simultaneously lifting your breastbone and the crown of your head toward the ceiling. Roll your shoulders up and back and release your shoulder blades down. Your lower back should not be overarched.
  3. Focus on your breathing as the air travels down into your belly and back up toward your head.

Benefits: Creates a sense of stability. Strengthens and tones the thighs and buttocks. Creates heat in the body. Strengthens and opens the shoulder girdle.

  1. Slide your feet back a few inches, hold onto the sides of the chair, and lean slightly forward.
  2. Inhale and raise your arms toward the ceiling. As you exhale, press down firmly through your heels, lifting your seat 2 inches off the chair. Pause. Inhale and very slowly sit back down, and then lower your arms as you exhale.
  3. Repeat this sequence 8–10 times.

Benefits: Opens the back of the neck and spine. Calms the nervous system. Creates a cooling and calming effect for the body and mind.

Note: After each of the following exercises, repeat the Forward Bend to release your back and neutralize your spine.

  1. Slide your thumbs into the hip creases at the top of your thighs, where your thighs meet your hips. As you inhale, press down through your feet and hands and elongate your spine. As you exhale, draw your belly in toward your spine and lean forward.
  2. Tuck your chin to release your neck, allowing your upper back to round at the end of your movement. Let your arms hang, staying in the pose for a few breaths. During the stay, as you inhale, lift your chest slightly and elongate your spine. Exhale and allow your spine to release.
  3. To come out of the pose, slowly roll up through your spine, stacking your vertebrae from the base of your spine, with your head lifting last.

Benefits: Stretches the belly, torso, and underarms. May help invigorate the senses.

  1. While in the Seated Mountain pose, inhale and circle your arms out to the sides and up to the ceiling. As you exhale, circle your arms back down to your sides. Repeat three times.
  2. Raise your arms above your head, interlink your fingers, and flip your palms to face the ceiling. Stay for three breaths. While you inhale, press down through your feet, elongate your spine, straighten your elbows, and press your palms toward the ceiling. Exhale, allowing your elbows to bend and your spine to relax. Repeat three times.
  3. Lower your arms back down to your sides.

Benefits: Loosens and lengthens the spine. Improves the circulation to the discs between the vertebrae. Massages abdominal organs.

  1. Sit on the front edge of the chair and place your hands on your knees. As you inhale, press down through your feet and pull back on your knees. Lift up through your chest—allowing your back to arch—and lift your gaze to extend your spine more fully.
  2. As you exhale, bring your gaze down and draw your belly in toward your spine. Tuck your chin toward your chest and gently curl inward, allowing your spine to round. Repeat for five cycles.

Note: Though these movements could be easy for some, please take precaution and do not strain your body or move beyond your capacity. In this pose, build awareness of stuck and tense areas of your back and bring your attention, breath, and movement to those areas.

Benefits: May relieve lower back pressure. Stimulates internal organs. Releases tension around spine.

  1. Sit facing forward in the chair. Place your heels beneath your knees at hip width, with toes pointing straight ahead.
  2. As you inhale, press down through your feet, raise your arms forward and up, and elongate through all four sides of your torso.
  3. As you exhale, draw your belly toward your spine and rotate left, turning your belly and chest to face the left. Lower your arms and hold onto the left armrest of the chair. Inhale and pull on the armrest to elongate up through your spine. Exhale and twist by rotating your torso’s left side back and your torso’s right side forward. Include the rotation of your head so that you are gazing over your left shoulder.
  4. Stay in the twist for three breaths. After three complete breaths, let go of the chair, face forward, pause, and breathe. Repeat, turning to the right side instead.

At the end of this practice, bring your hands to the center of your lap, with the back of your left hand gently resting in your right palm. Close your eyes and notice your physical sensations and feelings.

Summer Popsicles Part II: Strawberry Lemon-Lime, Yogurt Parfait, and NingXia Red Orange Popsicles

Jul 16th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

When we think of summer, a few special things come to mind: warm days, lots of sunshine, and the need for a frozen treat to cool off. Next time you reach into the freezer for a frosty snack, make sure you have one of these on hand!

Strawberry Lemon-Lime Popsicles

Makes about 6 1/2-cup popsicles

  • 1/2 cup evaporated cane juice crystals
  • 2 pints fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 4 drops Lime essential oil
  • 2 drops Lemon essential oil
  • 1 drop Black Pepper essential oil (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt

Bring evaporated cane juice crystals, strawberries, and water to a boil in a small saucepan. Simmer until the crystals are dissolved, and then remove from heat and cool to room temperature.

When cooled, add Lime, Lemon, Black Pepper (if using), and salt and stir to combine. Process the mixture in a food processor or blender until smooth. Divide between popsicle molds, leaving 1/4-inch space at the top for expansion.

Freeze overnight or until completely frozen before removing from molds.

Yogurt Parfait Popsicles

Makes about 6 1/2-cup popsicles

  • 1 1/2 pints fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 drop Ocotea essential oil
  • 1/2 to 1 cup granola

Bring strawberries and honey to a boil in a small saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes, and then remove from heat and cool to room temperature.

When cooled, combine yogurt and Ocotea essential oil in a small bowl, and then scoop a generous spoonful of the strawberry mixture into the bottom of each mold. Add a spoonful of granola and a spoonful of the strawberry mixture. Continue to layer yogurt, granola, and strawberries until the molds are filled to 1/4 inch from the top. Tap molds lightly against the counter to remove air bubbles.

Freeze overnight or until completely frozen and enjoy!

NingXia Red Orange Popsicles

Makes about 6 1/2-cup popsicles

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups NingXia Red®
  • 3 drops Orange essential oil

Combine water, NingXia Red, and Orange essential oil in a bowl. Divide between popsicle molds, leaving 1/4 inch at the top for expansion.

Freeze overnight or until completely frozen before removing from molds.

Tips:

  • Don’t have any popsicle molds? You can use any kind of small cup to mold the popsicles. When the mixture is halfway frozen, insert a popsicle stick.
  • To unmold popsicles, dip the frozen molds in a warm bowl of water until the popsicles are easily removed. If the stick comes out before the popsicle, they weren’t frozen enough.
  • To store, unmold all of the popsicles and place them on a waxed paper-lined tray and refreeze for 10 minutes. Place popsicles in freezer bags, separated by extra strips of waxed paper.
