Less is More: What Makes Thieves Laundry Soap Different

Sep 10th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

When we formulated Thieves® Laundry Soap, there were two major questions we asked ourselves: what ingredients do we include? And, almost as importantly, what ingredients do we leave out?

Like other products in Young Living’s household cleaner lineup, Thieves Laundry Soap’s purpose is to provide our members with a true clean provided by a plant-based formula that is free from harsh additives. What are those additives? Here are three common ingredients that you may not have known about, plus a few tips on naturally keeping clothes white.

Optical Brighteners

Many popular laundry detergents contain optical brighteners to give clothes the appearance of being clean and white. By reflecting blue light, optical brighteners give the illusion of fabrics that look whiter than they actually are. These chemicals are designed to absorb into fabrics and remain on clothes after washing.

Thieves Laundry Soap is free from optical brighteners, because you don’t want your clothes to just look clean—you want them to actually be clean! Our plant-based formula uses pure essential oils and natural cleansing enzymes to wash your clothes and keep them fresh.

If you’re looking to keep your whites bright without adding synthetic chemicals to the wash, try one of these easy alternatives:

  • If you see stains on your clothes, pretreat them before washing.
  • Don’t mix your whites with other colors in the wash. Launder them in an all-white load and use hot water.
  • To whiten small items like socks or napkins, fill a pot with water and a few lemon slices, bring to a boil, turn off the heat, and add linens. Soak for up to an hour, then launder as usual.
  • For an extra brightening boost for whites, hang them dry in the sun for natural bleaching!

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

Sodium lauryl sulfate, or SLS, is a cleansing agent widely used in products like soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, and laundry detergents. It is used so often because it’s inexpensive and produces lots of foamy lather. Many people are concerned about SLS in their products because it can sometimes cause irritation, itchiness, and may have other unknown side effects.

Thieves Laundry Soap is free from SLS and other sulfates. The cleaning power behind Thieves Laundry Soap comes from pure essential oils and natural enzymes.

Synthetic Perfumes

Some people consider synthetic perfumes to be problematic because companies aren’t required to disclose the exact ingredients in the fragrances. But as the world leader in essential oils, we prefer to work with the refreshing scents of the pure essential oils that set us apart. Bergamot, Jade Lemon, and the essential oils in our Thieves blend provide a refreshing scent without any hidden synthetic fragrances.

What tips do you have for naturally keeping your clothes looking their best? Share with us in the comments!

Sunny Lawrence: The Woman behind the Iron Cowboy

Sep 8th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Recently, Young Living’s brand ambassador James Lawrence took on the unheard of challenge to complete 50 Ironman triathlons, in 50 states, in 50 days. His entire family, including wife, Sunny, and five children, accompanied him on his cross-country journey. The news media covered the story mostly from James’ perspective, so we wanted to know what the experience was like for his wife, Sunny. She is the person who inspired James to run his first race, and he credits her as his biggest supporter and partner in their journey.

How did the idea for the 50.50.50 come about, and was it a family decision?

In 2012 James was gone for five weeks competing. By the time he returned, I thought he would be ready to relax and take a break for a while. Almost immediately, he shared his idea with me to do 50 triathlons in all 50 states, in 50 days. James is a dreamer, always looking for the next adventure. It took me some time, but I realized how important it was to James and how much impact it could have on others. So, we began planning. We put up a map in the front room and it became a family plan. Once the plan was in place, James began training and we went about normal life.

How did you help James train for the 50.50.50?

During the last few months of training, James had moments of discouragement and frustration, so I enlisted friends to train with him. I could make sure he had companionship and encouragement as he faced the long, grueling days. May was unseasonably cold and wet, so he spent most days training inside, which made it even more important for him to have someone training alongside him. I was just finishing up my degree in psychology at the same time, so it gave me comfort to know he had an entire support system to rely on while I simultaneously pursued my own goal.

How do you plan for a family to be away from home for nearly two months?

About a month before embarking on the 50.50.50, we moved out of our home, put all of our belongings in storage, and stayed with friends. James was training harder than ever and was anxious to get on the road and get started. I spent my days doing planning, planning, and more planning. I did my best to keep things practical and only packed necessities.

What role did Young Living play in the journey?

People have asked me how it is possible to take on an endeavor of this magnitude. We relied on sponsors to ensure that James had everything he needed, as well as provide for our family. We sought sponsorships from companies that provided products we already loved. Young Living is one of our major sponsors, and I cannot imagine our lives without them. I have an emotional attachment to the products and use them every day for everyone in our family. James’ mom introduced us to the products years ago, and when it came time to do this journey, it seemed natural to include them.

How did you and the kids spend your days?

Once we got on the road, I depended on the crew to take care of James so I could look after the kids. The two older girls participated in the events—selling T-shirts, running with James, and interacting with new people we met along the way. I made sure the kids got to see things in each state so they experienced a little culture during our journey. There was always something new to experience every day. They got to meet different people everywhere we went and loved it. They would sleep during the long drives, waking up asking me, “What state are we in?”

What was the driving force for James to accomplish this goal?

Throughout the journey, we kept our focus on the goal to raise money for the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation and to create awareness for childhood obesity. To date we have raised nearly $80,000 for the foundation. The generosity and support from people in every state astounded us. We are most proud of the fact that our children were part of that—they knew what we were doing and why. It was important to us that they felt involved and understood why we were doing it.

How did you help James get through the tough times?

There were some frustrating moments along the way, and sometimes I felt like the bad guy. James would be exhausted, almost delirious, and in pain. People around him were telling him he should rest. I kept him focused on his long-term goal. I would tell him, “Today is just a day; we have to keep on going.” I knew my role was to keep him focused on the end goal. He trusted me and knew I had his best interests at heart.

What was life like after the challenge was over and you returned to Utah?

Coming home was surreal. There was media everywhere for days. Cleaning out the RV was like moving out of a home. Shortly after returning, James left to Texas to speak at Young Living’s annual convention. While he was gone, I found a home and got us moved in. I knew it was something I could do for our family and to give him a place to call home when he returned.

What does the future hold for the Lawrence family?

More than a month after returning, life is just now starting to feel normal again. It is different, but normal. The kids started school. I begin an internship in the fall, then off to grad school. I’m not sure what I will do with my degree yet, but it was important to me to achieve this goal for myself. James is able to be home with the family more than most husbands, which allows us to both pursue our goals and dreams.

I have no idea what the future holds for our family, but I am okay with that. I embrace my husband’s adventurous nature and trust that he will do things that make sense for our family. He pulls me out of my comfort zone but still supports my dreams and goals along the way. Today we are settling into “normal” life in our new home. Tomorrow we could be back on the road again. We will continue to make mutual sacrifices and support one another. Everything in our home is and will always be about working together as a team.

Getting to Know Your Carrier Oils

Aug 28th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Carrier oils are usually overlooked because they don’t contain the therapeutic constituents of other essential oils, but they can play an indispensable companion of topically applied oils. Let’s take a closer look at these carriers and why they deserve a place on the shelf of anyone who uses and loves essential oils.

What are carrier oils?

Carrier oils are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application.

What aren’t carrier oils?

Vegetable shortening, butter, and margarine are best left in the kitchen—they’re not intended for topical use. Mineral oil and other petroleum derivatives like petroleum jelly should also not be used as carrier oils.

How are carrier oils used?

Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate or have a strong aroma, making them the perfect pair for diluting especially strong essential oils—reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. When you dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, you can also control its concentration before applying.

Like other substances that are high in fat, carrier oils have a limited shelf life, meaning that eventually they can go bad. Depending on the type, oils with a short shelf life should typically be used within six months, while oils with a longer shelf life may stay good for up to a year. It’s important to store oils in their original air-tight containers in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, to maximize shelf life.

Carrier oils can vary widely in their consistency, absorption, aroma, shelf life, and other characteristics. Carrier oils can be blended to change or combine their properties, so you can mix and match until you find the blend that’s just right for you!

Protein Power: 12 Quick and Easy Protein-Filled Snacks

Aug 24th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

From your head to your toes and everything in between, protein is a necessary component of every cell in the body. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissue, and it is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and other essential chemicals in the body. Your hair and nails are almost exclusively made of protein. Clearly, protein is indispensable—both in your body and in your diet.

Along with fat and carbohydrates, protein is a macronutrient, meaning that the body needs relatively large amounts of it. Vitamins and minerals, which are only needed in small quantities, are called micronutrients. But unlike fat and carbohydrates, the body does not store protein and, therefore, has no reservoir to draw on when it needs a new supply.

One study suggests that consuming protein at regular intervals during the day may help support whole-body metabolism. Eating snacks rich in protein throughout the day could aid how your body uses this essential nutrient.1

How much do I need?

Exactly how much protein you need changes with age. According to WebMD, here are a few guidelines for daily protein intake, according to age:

  • Babies: about 10 grams
  • School-age kids: 19-34 grams
  • Teenage boys: up to 52 grams
  • Teenage girls: 46 grams
  • Adult men: about 56 grams
  • Adult women: about 46 grams
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women: about 71 grams

How can I get more protein in my diet?

Here are 10 quick and easy snacks that offer protein! Try adding some of these to your daily routine to give your diet a delicious boost of protein.

  1. Greek yogurt topped with toasted almonds: 17 grams of protein per 170-gram container of nonfat Greek yogurt
  2. Hummus and red pepper slices: 6 grams of protein per 1/4 cup hummus and half a red pepper
  3. Cottage cheese topped with dried wolfberries: 27 grams of protein per 1 cup of cottage cheese and 2 tablespoons of wolfberries.
  4. New Pure Protein Complete in Vanilla Spice or Chocolate Deluxe: 25 grams of protein per serving
  5. Deli rollup: a slice of tomato, lettuce, and thin slices of red bell pepper with a squirt of mustard, all wrapped in a slice of turkey: Pure Protein Complete - Young Living12 grams of protein per 2 rollups
  6. Hardboiled egg: 6 grams of protein per egg
  7. Almond butter with celery sticks or apple slices: 8 grams of protein per 2 tablespoons almond butter and 1 apple or 2 celery stalks
  8. Steamed edamame: 4 grams of protein per 1/2 cup of edamame
  9. Raw almonds: 5 grams of protein per 20 almonds
  10. Roasted chickpeas: 7 grams of protein per 1/2 cup of chickpeas

Tips for Kissable Lips

Aug 20th, 2015 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Just a little care and know-how can help make your lips kissably smooth. Start your lip care routine with an exfoliating lip scrub, which can help by removing dead skin cells from lips. Not only does this reveal softer-feeling skin cells, but it can also help prepare lips for the smooth application of lip balm.

Apply lip balm that’s rich in natural waxes and essential oils that can help nourish tender skin. By combining your choice of Young Living lip balm, LBrianté lip gloss, lipstick, and essential oils, you’ll have a custom lip balm that’s as unique as it is hydrating!

Lavender Essential Oil - Young LivingExfoliating Lip Scrub

  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1–2 drops Lavender essential oil or another aromatic essential oil of your choice*

Combine brown sugar, honey, olive oil, and Lavender essential oil in a small glass container and mix until a paste is formed. To use, gently rub onto lips in a circular motion, and then wipe or rinse off. Store in an airtight container.

*We strongly recommend NOT using any citrus essential oils or blends, which could be too harsh on exfoliated skin.

Tinted Lip Balm

  • One tube of Young Living lip balm (Lavender, Grapefruit, or Cinnamint)
  • One tube of LBrianté lip gloss
  • One-quarter tube of your favorite shade of red or pink lipstick
  • 1–2 drops Lavender essential oil or another aromatic essential oil of your choice
  • 1–2 small, airtight glass containers

Twist out the tube of lip balm into a small stainless steel or glass bowl. Place the stainless steel bowl over a small amount of water in a double boiler and heat over low on your stovetop until the lip balm is melted. Remove from heat and add the gloss side of your preferred LBrianté gloss, lipstick, and additional essential oils. Combine well, pour into small glass containers, and then let cool completely in the fridge before using.

The Young Living lip balm will add nourishing hydration; LBrianté will add just a hint of shine; and your choice of lipstick will give it just the right amount of translucent color.

Cool Azul Sports Gel delivers a cooling sensation to the skin with a unique, plant-based formula that includes pure essential oils. Here are three reasons why our members are loving this new product:

1. Over 10 ml of Essential Oils

Cool Azul Sports Gel contains an unparalleled amount of essential oils: a full 10 percent of the formula! That means that each 3.4-oz. tube contains enough essential oils to overfill a 10-ml bottle. This amount is significantly higher than similar products on the market—more than 2–3 times as much in some cases.

The formula features 13 distinct essential oils that work together for a power-packed essential oil blend in Cool Azul Sports Gel: Young Living-exclusive Dorado Azul, Peppermint, Wintergreen, Sage, Copaiba, Plectranthus Oregano, Tea Tree, Lavender, Blue Cypress, Elemi, Caraway Seed, Vetiver, and German Chamomile.
