How Did D. Gary Young Formulate Thieves?

Thieves Essential Oil BlendYoung Living Founder and Chairman of the Board D. Gary Young recounts the history of his formulation of the essential oil blend Thieves, which was created as a result of his studying at the Warwick University in London, England, in 1991 and spending many hours at the London Library researching essential oils and their history.

“I must tell you that I have read 17 different versions of the Thieves story,” says Gary, “Some that claim there were four thieves and others that claim there were 40! Many of these legends took place in the 15th century, but still others put the date in the 18th century. The formulas also varied from one story to the next, but through my research, I was led to four key botanicals that were mentioned again and again. Those ingredients were clove, cinnamon, rosemary, and lemon—four of the same ingredients that make up Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend today.

“The legends speculate that the thieves believed that wearing this special combination of botanicals provided protection while they were stealing. French authorities recognized that there was such value in this mixture that upon the thieves’ capture, they received a more merciful punishment on condition that they divulge the ingredients in their secret formula to the king.

“To round out my modern Thieves formula and add another element of protection, I included eucalyptus radiata, which would have been rare to find in those days.”

A 7-day meal plan for the summer

Jul 21st, 2016 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

All the fresh produce available during the summertime makes it a great time to refresh your nutrition and wellness goals. We asked Young Living Brand Ambassador and author of The Body Doesn’t Lie, Vicky Vlachonis to help us put together a seven-day meal plan that takes advantage of the farmer’s market and puts you back on track to vitality. From breakfast to dinner and snacks in between, we’ve got you covered!

Vicky talked to UCLA-registered dietitian, Nancee Jaffe for some nutrition tips while compiling the meal plan, and Nancee emphasized the meal that’s easiest to forget: breakfast. She gave us helpful advice to keep in mind when we’re rushing to put something together in the morning.

“I generally recommend 10–20 grams of protein at breakfast—this can look like a homemade protein smoothie, 3–5 egg whites, or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter,” she said. “Research shows that protein increases satiety, or feelings of satisfaction and fullness, without dramatically increasing calories. It also has been shown to lower blood glucose levels and blood pressure.”

With that, let’s see what goodness Vicky has in store for us!

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 35 minutes

Yield: Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 4 cups lean ground turkey
  • 1 bunch parsley, finely chopped
  • ½ tablespoon dry oregano

  • 1 cup vegetable stock
  • 1 large white onion, grated

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

  • 1 egg

  • 1 slice
rye or eikorn bread
  • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Place the rye bread in a bowl of hot water for 2–3 minutes to soften; then carefully drain.
  3. Combine the meat, parsley, oregano, vegetable stock, onion, olive oil, egg, bread, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Separate the mixture into ½-inch, palm-size patties.
  5. Arrange the patties on a baking tray greased with a little olive oil and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden brown.

DIY Citronella Floating Candle Bowl

Jul 18th, 2016 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Classy doesn’t need to be complicated. This DIY floating candle bowl project will instantly transform your everyday backyard party or BBQ into an enchanting, fragrance-filled summer celebration. All it takes are a few odds and ends you likely have just lying around the house! Make a collection of these bowls and arrange them around the patio, then sit back and enjoy the relaxing glow and the warm summer scent of Citronella and Lemon.

DIY Citronella Floating Candle Bowl

Supplies
• Glass bowl or container
• Decorations of your choice. You can use anything! (Lemon peels, orange peels, cinnamon sticks, lavender, rosemary, flower petals, river rocks, etc.)
• 20 drops Citronella essential oil
• 10 drops Lemongrass essential oil
• 1 tablespoon witch hazel
• Water to top off glass bowl or container
• 1 unscented floating candle

Instructions
1. Gather decorations and arrange in bowl. We recommend cutting them into two-inch pieces so they don’t bunch at the top of the bowl or cause it to overturn.
2. Add witch hazel, Citronella, and Lemongrass essential oil to the bowl.
3. Fill in the remaining bowl space with water.
4. After placing your bowl outside, top it off with the floating candle and light it to create a cozy, aromatic ambiance you and your guests can enjoy throughout the evening.

Treat Yourself—3 Steps to Make Time for Me Time

Jul 12th, 2016 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

When your schedule is filled with helping and taking care of everyone else, it’s easy to forget about your own needs. Thankfully, it only takes a few steps to create a night that’s all your own! Our three tips will help you plan a much-deserved night to yourself.

Step 1: Plan Ahead

Treat Yourself - Plan AheadYou’ve heard it before—fail to plan, plan to fail! Taking time to care for yourself is no different. Pencil your special night into your calendar and treat it like the priority it is. You wouldn’t cancel on a friend in need, so give yourself the same respect.

After you have it booked, make any necessary arrangements. Get a sitter for the kids or have your spouse take them out for a few hours. Take care of household to-dos and grab any special treats you need, whether it be a new book or some indulgent snacks. Try your best to eliminate as many distractions as possible so you can focus on just yourself for the night.

Step 2: Set the Scene

Treat Yourself - Set The SceneWhile everyone’s perfect pampering looks different, the goal is to create the environment that’s most relaxing for you. A great place to start is playing calming music, dimming the lights, lighting candles, and diffusing your favorite essential oil or blend.

Want to really indulge? Invest in a new diffuser to make your experience extra spa-like. Choose a simple and chic style like the Dewdrop™ or Bamboo™ Diffuser, pick up the luxurious Aria™ Ultrasonic Diffuser, or look through all our diffusers to find your perfect match. Whichever diffuser you use, it’s just as important that you diffuse the perfect aroma during your relaxing night. We’re fans of classics such as Lavender, German Chamomile, Cedarwood, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang.

Add even more luxury with some wholesome, indulgent treats. Create a platter of your favorite snacks, and don’t forget some fun drinks! We love pairing Zyng™ with Vitality™ essential oils to create a refreshing, light option. Pour your custom cocktail into a stemmed glass to make the night feel extra special.

Step 3: Relax!

Once your prep work is done, it’s time to treat yourself! Settle in with a good book, a TV show you’ve been wanting to catch up on, or a favorite hobby. Need some help planning the perfect night? Check out our ideas below, all infused with the goodness of essential oils.

Spa Bath Treatment

Treat Yourself - Spa TreatmentUnwind in a spa-like atmosphere from the comfort of your home. We love bath bonuses like face masks, bath salts, a captivating book, bath gel, and body lotion.

Tip: Apply body lotion to damp skin to lock in moisture.

Our top picks:

Relaxing Facial

Treat Yourself - Relaxing FacialGet an at-home facial in just four steps! The basis of beautiful skin starts with a cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer, and you can add some extra oomph with a gentle exfoliator. With the additional attention, you’ll experience beyond-skin-deep pampering.

Tip: Try a DIY stress-reducing facial massage.

With your eyes closed, massage the sides of your jaw in large, circular motions. Create a path past the sides of your mouth, along your nostrils, and over your cheekbones. Eventually move to your forehead and temples. Tension accumulates in this area, so spend some extra time here. For about one minute, work from both temples to the middle of your forehead and back to the temples.

Our top picks:

Pedicure Pick-Me-Up

Treat Yourself - PedicureFeel great from your head to your toes. A DIY pedicure is easy, and it can save you a trip to the salon. Plus, a little time spent on a pedicure keeps your feet looking great for days or weeks!

Tip: Take a look at our Three Simple Steps to Fab Feet blog for ideas to exfoliate, moisturize, and pamper your feet.
