9 things you never knew about Patchouli

Sep 18th, 2017 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

The earthy, complex nature of Patchouli essential oil makes it easy to rave about. Whether we’re using it on its own or in some of our favorite blends such as DiGize™ and Peace Calming®, Patchouli oil is versatile in its uses and benefits. Its musky scent makes it popular for use in soaps and perfumes, either used as a distinctive aroma on its own or to blend with other complementary scents.

Free spirits have been drawn to Patchouli oil’s unique aroma for a long time. If you know anyone from the Woodstock era, see if the scent brings back any fond memories, or if you know anyone from the Napoleonic era, see if they recall it fondly from their favorite perfumes. (Just kidding. If you know anyone from the Napoleonic era, they’re probably ghosts.)

There’s plenty more to know about Patchouli essential oil and its uses. These fun facts will give you all the Patchouli prowess you need!

Patchouli is part of the mint family, but it has a powerful, musky scent—meaning you probably won’t find anyone chewing Patchouli-flavored gum! Instead, it’s used topically and aromatically throughout the world.

Steam distillation helps us carefully extract Patchouli essential oil from the leaves of this low, bushy shrub that is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia.

Yogis can get some of Patchouli oil’s benefits when they integrate it into their practice. Diffusing it or applying a few drops topically beforehand can help create a calming and grounding atmosphere.

This complex oil contains the naturally occurring constituents patchoulol, bulnesene, and alpha-guaiene, which contribute to Patchouli essential oil’s versatility.

Looking to add some sultry scents to sudsing up? The deep, earthy aroma makes Patchouli oil soap incredibly popular, but to get even more Patchouli in your life, try using Patchouli oil in our DIY lotion bar recipe in place of the Lavender for an update on a classic.

Use it as a woodsy base note when creating a personal perfume. Patchouli oil perfume will help you stand out, without drama. Try our DIY perfume tutorial to perfect your scent!

Get skin that will make your friends ask what your secret is! Patchouli oil may improve the appearance of dry and dull skin, so apply 2–3 drops to your face as part of your nightly regimen for a healthy, youthful glow.

Patchouli essential oil can help your family wind down after a long day when you diffuse it to create a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere.

Enjoy the benefits of Patchouli essential oil in other Young Living products such as Magnify Your Purpose™, Abundance™, and Live with Passion™.

Healthy living across the globe: 5 lessons we can learn from other cultures

Sep 7th, 2017 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Around the world, people want to know how to stay healthy. From mastering healthy eating tips to balancing work and play, there’s so much to learn from worldwide cultures in your journey to learn how to get healthy. With help from Young Living Education Events Presenter and Registered Nurse Ed Dailey, we’ve gathered some of our favorite simple health tips from regions all over to help you discover how to live a healthy lifestyle that works for you. See what you’re already doing and what you can implement today!

Ikaria, Greece

In Ikaria, healthy habits are established from an early age—especially in the kitchen. Children start cooking with their families very young, learning to prepare food without modern appliances and discovering traditional cooking methods and recipes.

Fun fact

Olive oil is a staple in the Ikarian diet, and people from this region consume about 4 tablespoons of it every day! They also include potatoes, fermented cheese, and wild greens—like arugula and dandelion—in their diet.

YL tip

Ikarians love lemons! Get inspired by adding a drop of Lemon Vitality™ to your water, tea, or cuisine.

Okinawa, Japan

Relationships are such an important part of health and happiness in Okinawa, Japan, that the culture institutes social support groups called moai. The tradition began with farmers who would work together to help and support each other even if their crops failed. Now, a moai can offer social, emotional, and even financial support, so everyone has someone in their corner when they need it.

Fun fact

In addition to healthy relationships, the people of Okinawa also focus on healthy eating. Some common foods in their diet are sweet potatoes, turmeric, garlic, and seaweed, which contains folate and iodine.

YL tip

Diffuse the positive, uplifting aroma of Oola® Friends™ while repeating the affirmation “I am blessed with empowering, healthy relationships” to remind yourself of the value of lifelong bonds.

Denmark

Reported to be one of the world’s happiest countries, Denmark has a culture rooted in choices that bring true joy. Instead of things that can be bought, the people of Denmark focus on creating strong social ties—which are especially important in times of trouble—and on participating in charitable efforts.

Fun fact

While Danish winters are known for short days and dark, cold nights, the country puts a positive spin on the harsh winters by practicing hygge, a cultural mentality that focuses on coziness, love, and relationships.

YL tip

See how it feels to share your blessings with others by supporting a charitable organization such as The D. Gary Young, Young Living Foundation. Whether you share a few dollars or participate in an event, helping someone else can make you more grateful for your own blessings.

Sardinia, Italy

Simplicity is at the foundation of the Sardinian way of life, and it icharitable organization,s part of what makes the area so healthy and happy. People in the area source most of their food themselves and many are shepherds. Because of this lifestyle, goat milk and cheese are common at the tables of Sardinian homes, where both family and a cast of loved ones gather. Social ties and relationships are also another simple yet rewarding aspect of Sardinian life.

Fun fact

Grains make up almost 50 percent of the Sardinian diet, while dairy takes up about 25 percent. Additionally, chickpeas are popular for their fiber and protein, while tomatoes provide vitamin C and potassium. Sugar makes up only 3 percent of their diet.

YL tip

Fennel is a popular food in Sardinia, and it’s often used for its medicinal properties. Add Fennel Vitality™ to your own wellness regimen for digestive support and to help support a healthy outlook during PMS.*

Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica

Humble and hardworking, the people of the Nicoya Peninsula integrate an active lifestyle into everything they do. Instead of including moments of physical activity into a sedentary way of life, this culture finds joy in the hard, physical labor of everyday tasks and chores. When your lifestyle is built on staying active, you don’t have to worry about making time to get moving!

Fun fact

Nicoyans’ active, outdoor lifestyle helps them get healthy amounts of sun as well, which helps them get enough of the vital nutrient vitamin D.

YL tip

Don’t shy away from physical chores. Instead, celebrate the opportunity to move your body and accomplish something worthwhile. Keep a bottle of Cool Azul™ Pain Relief Cream at home, so you have one less excuse to keep you from moving the furniture, pulling weeds, or sweeping the floor.

8 answers to the most common essential oil questions

Aug 30th, 2017 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Whether you’re a die-hard essential oil fan or just getting started, you probably have questions about essential oils you’re searching for answers to, like “Are essential oils safe for kids?” and “What’s a Vitality oil anyway?” and maybe even “What the heck are essential oils?”

Well, you came to the right place! We’re answering all these questions and more with this special FAQ blog post. You might even discover the answer to a question you didn’t even know you had!

1. I’m becoming EO-obsessed, and I want to know everything. For starters, what exactly is an essential oil?

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained by careful steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. The resulting oils have a distinctive molecular profile that gives them specific aromas and properties. Essential oils have been used by people for thousands of years for everything from cosmetic and dietary purposes to spiritual and religious use. We believe that essential oils are the best of nature distilled, and they have the power to elevate, motivate, and inspire.

2. Tell me more about how they can enhance my life! How can I use them?

There are countless ways to use essential oils: in the kitchen or at the gym, diffusing them or applying them to the skin—the possibilities are endless. The most important thing to remember is that each oil is different. Always check individual labels to find out if an oil needs to be diluted before using it on the skin or ingesting it and how often it should be used. A great place to start is to experiment with your own custom essential oil diffuser blends to find the scents that speak to your soul. You can also check out other Young Living blog posts and YoungLiving.com for enough tips and tricks to keep you busy with oils.

3. Wait, diluted? Why do they need to be diluted?

Pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they are extracted. Some oils are considered gentle and generally safe to apply directly to the skin, like Lavender and Copaiba. Other oils are considered “hot” and should be diluted before they are applied to skin, like Cinnamon Bark and Oregano. This also goes for our line of Vitality™ oils. Always refer to individual oil labels for dilution instructions.

4. Ah, yes—Vitality essential oils! How are they different from regular essential oils?

Bottles of classic essential oils and the corresponding bottles of Vitality oils contain the same oils. However, Vitality oils are labeled for dietary use, and the classic essential oils are labeled for topical and aromatic use. The designation of the two products allows you to share all the ways to use essential oils in the correct way, in line with package directions.

5. If some oils are so powerful, are essential oils safe for kids?

Some oils are safe for kids and some are not. To make it easy for you, we created essential oil blends and essential oil-infused products specifically for kids and babies. Before using Young Living products with your little ones, carefully review the individual product label for full information on appropriate age usage and any cautions. Each child is different, so it’s always a good idea to test a small amount to make sure no irritation occurs before applying to a large area of skin. The same goes when diffusing essential oils around babies. Be sure to test them first! You should also be generous when it comes to dilution and remember to use less than you would for an adult. Some of our favorite essential oils for babies are Grapefruit, Lavender, and German Chamomile. Learn more about using essential oils on your little ones with our Essential Oils in the Nursery infographic.

6. Okay, so some essential oils are safe for babies, but are they safe to use during pregnancy?

Just like with babies, some essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy and some are not. The aroma of certain essential oils has actually been known to help with pregnancy nausea, like Grapefruit, Peppermint, and Lavender. There are others we recommend that pregnant women stay away from, like Clary Sage, Tansy, Hyssop, Fennel, Wintergreen, and Sage, as well as any blends or supplements that contain these oils. We always recommend that pregnant women consult with a trained health professional with experience using essential oils. For more info on essential oils an pregnancy, check out our Pregnancy by Trimester infographic.

7. Essential oils just keep sounding better and better! Why Young Living though? What sets you apart?

Our standards for purity are unmatched. Because synthetics, contaminants, cheap fillers, and unethical production practices are not an option for our essential oils, we source our oils from our own farms and vetted suppliers and test extensively. If an essential oil doesn’t meet our strict testing requirements, it’s rejected and can’t be used in any Young Living product. It’s all part of our Seed to Seal® standard and our three pillars: Sourcing, Science, and Standards. For more information visit SeedtoSeal.com.

8. Well, I’m ready to stock up on more YL oils! Do they ever expire or go bad?

Because we don’t use preservatives or synthetic fillers, Young Living essential oils do expire. However, most essential oils are amazingly stable and can last many years—some even decades—without breaking down or changing in aroma or chemical composition. Each oil has a different shelf life. Tea Tree and Lemon oils, for example, are more prone to oxidation than other essential oils. All of our oils are packaged in amber glass bottles to protect them from sun exposure, but you can help extend their life even further by storing them away from heat and sun.

5 of the best back-to-school tips for your elementary schooler

Aug 24th, 2017 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Ready to face the back-to-school battle? Between first-day outfits, school supplies, lunchbox prep, and after-school activities, you and your kids have plenty on your plates. And it doesn’t make it any easier when the kids don’t want to go to school. To make this back-to-school season the most fun and least challenging yet, we’ve compiled some of our favorites to help the whole family get through the day, from breakfast to bedtime.

Master Your Morning

Make the most important meal of the day shine with a good, healthy breakfast. Our Gluten-Free Yogurt Waffles with Lemon-Lavender Syrup are a filling and tasty way to start the day, or you can opt for our Einkorn Wolfberry Muffins for a hearty treat to go! Serve the meal with KidScents® MightyZyme for relief from fullness, pressure, bloating, and more,* so they’re ready to have their best possible day.

Tip: After breakfast, take a first day of school picture before sending them off!

*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Conquer the Carpool

Whether you take just your little ones to school or you share a carpool with all the neighborhood parents, car time is a great opportunity to pump up the kids for the day. Give a quick pep talk before they head out of the car or use your USB Diffuser or Orb™ Diffuser to infuse the trip with an essential oil such as GeneYus™ or Stress Away™. Not driving your children yourself? Write them a letter to read on the bus or the walk to school.

Tip: Make a special playlist for the first days of school. A little carpool karaoke will help take their minds off any first-day jitters and add some fun to the back-to-school season.

Prep Lunch with Love

Second to recess, lunch is the highlight of the school day. Make it memorable with a nutritious lunch that will make other kids eager to trade! Pack a chilled NingXia Red® single, a Wolfberry Crisp Bar, and the kid kabobs featured in our Think Outside the Lunch Box post for a balanced, fun meal.

Tip: Write a sweet, comforting, inspiring, or silly note on your child’s napkin to help him or her make it through the rest of the day.

Make the Afternoon Awesome

The final school bell may have rung, but you and your kids know there’s still more to pack in before bedtime! Whether they’re at music lessons or study sessions, help kids maximize their time with help from essential oils. Diffuse Peppermint or GeneYus while they practice their instruments, do homework, or work on their art projects.

Tip: Instead of shuttling back and forth between home and activities, stop at a park or café near your kid’s practice venue. You can unwind with some alone time or whip out your laptop to get work done!

Settle into Sleep

After a long day, bed is the only place you want to be—but sometimes the kids feel differently. Help signal that it’s bedtime with a nightly routine that gently transitions into quiet, peaceful rest. Diffuse SleepyIze™ in the bedroom to create a relaxing environment or draw a warm bath infused with Peace Calming®. A gentle foot or back rub with Relaxation™ Massage Oil is also a great reward for getting to bed on time!

Tip: Refresh stuffed animals with Thieves® Laundry Soap and any other favorite essential oils to make them extra loveable and cuddly!

Homemade blueberry-lavender ice cream recipe

Aug 21st, 2017 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Five ingredients and five minutes—that’s all it takes to prep this healthy homemade ice cream recipe! The flavor of lavender is becoming increasingly popular in desserts, but many of them don’t even contain real lavender. They instead rely on artificial ingredients and coloring. But not this ice cream—or should we say “nice” cream? Blueberries give this blend a lovely purple/blue hue, while pure Lavender Vitality™ essential oil adds an extra dimension of flavor and sophistication. Delicious, plant-based, and waistline friendly, this dessert is the perfect finish to a backyard party or just a hot summer day.

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 4 hours

Total Time: 4 hours, 5 minutes

Homemade blueberry-lavender ice cream

  2. Add frozen blueberries, coconut cream, Lavender Vitality, and agave to a high-powered blender or food processor.
  3. Pulse ingredients together, adding coconut water 1 tablespoon at a time to help the ingredients blend together smoothly. Be careful not to add too much liquid or your ice cream will become too soft.

Aug 16th, 2017 | Category: Young Living Product Blog

Curious about contouring? You might have heard about this technique from celebrities and makeup artists, but the basics of contouring are simple enough for anyone. Contouring helps define your natural face shape and can give you a polished look with a few strokes.

Watch this basic makeup tutorial to learn how you can conquer your contour with three simple steps using paraben-free makeup from Savvy Minerals by Young Living™!

Savvy Minerals Bronzer

Add a natural, sun-kissed glow with this mica mineral powder. Its buildable formula blends beautifully into both warm undertones and cool undertones for a dramatic contour or a subtle hint of color.

How to apply bronzer

After tapping a small amount of Savvy Minerals Bronzer into the jar lid, swirl the foundation brush or blush brush from our Savvy Minerals makeup brush set in the powder. Tap off any excess and apply bronzer wherever the sun would hit naturally or wherever you want a defined contour.

Fun fact

Summer Loved is your best bet for a bold, sharp contour, and Crowned All Over is perfect for a light, golden glow. The lighter pigment of Crowned

All Over makes it easy to add to your temples, cheeks, and anywhere the light hits for a healthy-looking radiance.

Savvy Minerals Misting Spray

Looking for the best makeup setting spray? Savvy Minerals Misting Spray uses only naturally derived ingredients—and no synthetic fragrances, colorants, alcohol, or parabens—for this premium, skin-nourishing misting spray.

How to apply misting spray

Use 2–3 sprays of Savvy Minerals Misting Spray on any makeup brush to help control loose powder and to help keep makeup in place throughout the day. Rub the brush against the back of your hand to remove any excess and apply makeup as you would normally.

Fun fact

Savvy Minerals Misting Spray uses luxurious, skin-loving essential oils—including Geranium, Lavender, and Rose—for an uplifting aroma and a formula that nourishes, soothes, and refreshes the skin.

Savvy Minerals Veil in Diamond Dust

Add a flawless finish and a sheer luminosity to your look with Savvy Minerals Veil in Diamond Dust. This finishing powder highlights the skin while giving it an airbrushed look.

How to apply Diamond Dust

Not sure how to apply highlighter or finishing powder? For a traditional contour, use a dense, flat brush to apply this powder to the tops of the cheekbones, the forehead, and down the line of the nose. Use a fluffy brush, like our veil brush, and lightly dust the entire face for an all-over airbrushed look.

Fun fact

Formulated without talc, bismuth, synthetic fragrances, or phthalates, Savvy Minerals Veil is a paraben-free makeup that is ideal for sensitive skin. It can be used on its own for a simple, natural look or as the final touch on a formal face.
