Fir Harvest – Part 1
Oct 8th, 2012 | Category: Young Living Product BlogParticipating in last winter’s Balsam Fir Harvest was an amazing experience that gave me a new appreciation for the dedication of Young Living’s distributors and the lengths the company will go to produce the highest quality oils. Before attending the event, colleagues warned me that the harvest was no easy task, so I was prepared for hard work and helping out where needed. Almost immediately I suspected their warnings may have been understated.
On my first day at the farm, Gary asked me if I could handle a chainsaw. Being a big, brawny former football player, I thought I could manage. He quickly assigned me to cut limbs from trees that fell into a gulley not far from camp. With snow up to my thighs, I cut away at the limbs all day long while trying to keep my balance on the rough slope. Fighting fatigue and the elements, I hoisted the heavy chainsaw over tree trunks and limbs, making sure I got to every branch. After we cut the limbs, they were loaded onto a wagon for the draft horses to pull out of the gulley. Watching those powerful, majestic animals pull the heavy wagon up the gulley hillside was an experience I’ll never forget. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, but the connection I felt with the land and the satisfaction of taking on and accomplishing new challenges were worth far more than all the effort.
By the end of the day, everyone was exhausted and ready for a warm supper back at camp. Evenings brought an opportunity to relax, forge new friendships, and listen to Gary share his knowledge and expertise about the oils.
Comment below by the end of the day on Friday for a chance to receive a bottle of balsam fir. Be sure to read next week’s blog for more of Brian’s experiences harvesting and more on the new Idaho blue spruce essential oil that was launched at convention.
